Our Horses Currently we have 11 horses which are used in various degrees with the Best Of Friends program. All of these horses either have been or are in the process of extensive training and handling. They are either rescue horses or ones that have been donated to the program.
We currently have 8 horses actually participating in our sessions and three horses in various stages of training to participate in the program in future sessions. This is necessary due to various guidelines which require that horses not be worked more than a three or four hour period. Therefore, to ensure the continued safety of the program as well as the cooperation of the horses we need to rotate their participation. One horse will be retired at the end of next year's session due to old age and will have to be cared for until the end of his natural life.
As noted above, the number and costs of "program" horses is actually larger than just those currently working in the program. Having a program which takes into account these additional horse considerations helps to promote not only safety for the students and volunteers, but program continuation as well.
